Companies have been known to search for potential candidate’s Facebook, Twitter, etc. and even if you have the highest private settings, nothing can ever be truly out of reach on the internet.
It is encouraged to also create a professional social network via Linkedin. Keep up to date with your professional contacts, join and actively participate in a few groups. It is common for people to receive invitations to interview for various positions via Linkedin and you may find yourself with a good opportunity to expand your career.

Speak to your Boss for a Role Change

There are many different sources for looking for a new position. Perhaps you plan to stay with the company you are with and simply want a different role. In this case, you should speak to your boss about your intentions so you have an advocate in your search. Your boss may have connections with that part of the organization or may be able to give you the opportunity to work in that role for a temporary basis.

Classifieds

If you don’t plan to stay with your current organization, it is best to keep quiet about your intentions. The oldest place to look for a position is going to be the classified ads in your local newspaper. The Sunday newspaper typically lists the most available positions. Usually the companies that are advertising are smaller organizations who are not looking for applicants outside the area.

Job Search Engines

There are many job search engines to choose from including Monster, Careerbuilder, Indeed etc. In addition, there are search engines that are specific to industries such as healthcare and telecom. If you are in a particular industry, the specified search engine is a good choice because the positions that are listed will be more relevant to your skills. As mentioned before, Linkedin has quickly become a viable source for searching for a position. They are also a job search engine that is growing in the number of listings available. Recruiters and headhunters are relying more and more on finding applicants via Linkedin. It gives you the opportunity to reach out to a recruiter for a position and extend your interest in the position. If you follow companies or are part of certain groups, job positions will be on listed on a regular basis.

Apply Directly in Company Website

If you are interested in certain companies, you can search and apply directly through their company website. More and more of these companies are also allowing you to create job alerts when new positions are posted. Creating a profile will save you time when you are ready to apply for a position since it saves your resume, candidate profile, and other information.

Job Fairs

Job fairs are another great opportunity to find a new position. Potential employers are available to speak to about various opportunities in their organization. Treat this situation like you would going to an actual interview. This means you must dress professionally and have copies of your resume available to hand out to potential employers.
